I float naked in the tar-coloured water. I left my clothes at the edge of the 50-metre pool. The guard dog’s not barking anymore either. He’s standing beside the pool gutter, wolfing down my leftover cocoa swirl bun. And it’s not like he was barking ’cause he wanted to catch me. He was happy to see me. We’re on pretty good terms. I often come down to swim at night, and then I always feed him. That pathetic beast must be bored out of his mind. After all, who wants to break into an empty pool? Swimming is the best at night. No one can see me and I can’t see anyone either. I swim a couple of laps, the last one on my back at an easy pace, looking up at the moon in the meantime. I’m looking for the smiley face but I can’t see it anywhere. The moon’s not a smiley face, but a round, yellow skull. I float in nothingness and I remember a photo of myself sitting on my old man’s shoulders as happy as a clam. I don’t really remember him ever putting me on his shoulders, because I was a pretty hefty kid, so I’m not sure my old man could lift me. He kept the picture in his car for a long time. This one time, we were coming home from somewhere at night, I don’t remember where—not like it matters—and the photo was there on top of the dash above the steering wheel, and as the streetlamps cast light on the interior at intervals, the picture kept reflecting on the windshield. Well, things were pretty fucked up by then. We didn’t even talk to each other the whole way. Night swimming is cool though, everything as quiet as the grave. There’s not too many people who get why this is so awesome. I don’t want anybody to see me naked. But I guess it’s not like it used to be when I first started coming here, freaking out about getting busted, freaking out about the black water, which is totally like a reflection of the night sky. Then, of course, things change and everything becomes a habit. Like this night swimming. I remember that night with Pop. The moon sucks me in, I totally space out, piss into the water, meanwhile, think about dumb shit like, what if there were two moons, two identical yellow disks, and they orbited together, and I turn quickly onto my stomach, but all I can see is the black water. The sun doesn’t know a thing about this night swimming.
